Recruiters and employers are increasingly using social media to find candidates to fill roles, as this is a way of gaining access to a passive market. The days of advertising and waiting for applications is a thing of the past and these days, recruiters are far more proactive. If you want to make sure recruiters can find you using social media platforms and that you leave a positive impression, these tips should help ensure you are maximising your potential.


Detailed Profile


It is important to take advantage of as many social media platforms as possible, to help you get found by recruiters. The most obvious one is LinkedIn, which is designed for professionals, but there are others, including Facebook, Twitter and Google +. You should ensure your profile is as detailed as possible, with as much information about who you are and what you do. With LinkedIn for example, you can display your CV on your profile page, so that recruiters can instantly find out more about your areas of expertise.

Be Careful with Content


It can be quite easy to forget that what you publish on social media is potentially being seen by thousands of people, but it is important to remember this. If you want to post photos of yourself on a drunken night out with friends, make sure your page is set to private, so that only your friends can see it. If a recruiter is looking for candidates and finds that you have made some controversial comments, they won’t be in too much of a rush to consider you for a job. Always think about your content before you post it and what impression it may leave on anyone who sees it.

Use Keywords


The only way recruiters will be able to find you, is through the use of keywords. For instance, if they are using LinkedIn to recruit for a specific role, they will usually put in the job title or specific skills which are needed. If you don’t have these, it will be very difficult for a recruiter to find you. If you are a paralegal for instance, make sure you state this on your profile. You should do this even if it’s your personal page.

Display Portfolio


If you have a portfolio available or your own website, put the details of it on your profile so that recruiters can take a look at your work. If there are major companies you have worked with and their details are not confidential, don’t be afraid to mention this on your social media. It’s your page and you want to make it as attractive to recruiters as possible.

Get Endorsed


With LinkedIn, you can get recommendations and endorsements to make your profile stand out and it is well worth doing this. If you have worked with anyone in the past who will be able to help, don’t be afraid to drop them a note asking them to provide a recommendation. This can really make you stand out amongst the others.
