In many ways, telephone interviews can seem a lot more daunting than face to face interviews. You can’t see expressions, therefore, you may not be able to determine how the interview is going. It can be easy to consider telephone interviews as a quick chat, but you should treat them in the same way as a face to face interview. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to dress for the occasion but you still need to act professionally. The telephone interview is quite often a stepping stone to a face to face interview onsite, so it is important to create the right impression. These are some tips for success in a manufacturing telephone interview.

Preparation is key

With any manufacturing interview, the interviewer wants to be sure that you know about the business, the role and what is expected from you. If you don’t know anything about the company, you are putting yourself on the back foot from the very beginning. It is important to be prepared. Take time to research the company and any recent news related to them. Read the job description and be sure you know what the expectations are and how you can contribute to the business. The more prepared you are, the greater your chances of impressing the interviewer. The bonus is that you can have this information in front of you while the interview is taking place, so there really is no excuse for a lack of preparation.

Take notes

As the telephone interview is usually the initial part of the process, there is scope here to get some useful information for the face to face interview. You have the advantage of being able to take notes, so make sure you listen and write down as much information as the interviewer gives you.

Schedule time

The interviewer will allocate a suitable time with you to conduct the interview and it is important that you are ready and waiting to take the call and in a suitable, quiet location. If you are not ready or prepared to answer the call, this will be a red flag to the interviewer, who will have taken time out their schedule to speak to you. You may not get a second chance if you are not ready for the interview.

Be upbeat

The interviewer only has your voice and general attitude to go on during a telephone interview, so it is important to be enthusiastic and clear with your answers. A lack of enthusiasm is highly off-putting and you may not get any further in the process if you sound disinterested. In addition to this, you should also be as clear as possible during the call and take time with your answers.

Social media

If you have any good testimonials on your LinkedIn profile or a relevant portfolio, this is a good opportunity to direct the interviewer to it. A strong presence on social media is important these days and you may give yourself some extra credits by showing the interviewer your positive contributions.
