If you have just been invited for an interview with a manufacturing company you have always wanted to work for for the role of production manager.
You are probably feeling excited but also a little apprehensive. Although there is never any guarantee of exactly which questions the interviewer will choose to ask, it is a good idea to prepare for competency based questions. These are some standard questions to expect at your production manager interview.
What you know about the manufacturing company
It is never a good idea to go into an interview without any knowledge of the company and what they do. If you do this, it will show a serious lack of interest, which is a huge red flag to an employer, especially at this level. With so many sources of information available to candidates these days, there is no excuse for attending an interview without conducting any research. LinkedIn is a good tool for finding out information on manufacturing companies and getting the low down on the interviewers. At a minimum, you would be expected to know what the business does, how many employees they have, locations and competitors.
Health and safety policies
The production manager has a number of health and safety responsibilities, so this is a topic which will probably come up during the interview. You may be asked how you comply with regulations or any up-to-date training you have had. This is quite a common topic for these types of roles, so worth giving some consideration when you are preparing for the interview.
Managing a team
The interviewer will want to be sure that you are able to manage a team and train new recruits who join the team. It is important to be able to answer a question like this with relevant examples. For instance, you may be asked when you have managed a team successfully, any training plans you have created or challenges you may have experienced when managing a team. Your examples should refer to a similar role you have been employed in and if possible, in a similar industry.
Production Managers are generally responsible for improving processes and making a real contribution to the business. You may be asked for examples of when you have improved processes and what the end result was. It is likely that you will be asked about your understanding of different business improvement techniques such as Six Sigma.
It is always better to be over prepared than under prepared when it comes to interviews and you should be ready to back up any answers with detailed examples. Stay calm, be focused and take time to listen to the questions the interviewer asks you. Remember, there is no rush to get through the interview – take your time and be your very best for the duration of the interview. After all, it’s only 60 or so minutes out your life.
