How do you know if you should accept the job?

A new job offer is exciting; especially if you have been out of work or you have just landed your dream role. However, it is important to take time to consider the job offer before you jump into accepting it. It is very easy to get caught up in the elation which comes of being offered a job but there are many aspects worth considering first. It is worth noting that you may be able to negotiate on some of the terms of the job offer, so don’t be too quick to reject it either. If you have just been offered a new role, these are some of the most important things to consider before you accept the job.

 

Responsibilities

If you have reached the point of being offered the job, you should have quite a clear understanding of what it entails and what is expected from you. If there are any elements you are unsure of, it is worth speaking to the employer about it, before you accept it. It may be that the employer has expectations of you that you won’t be able to fulfill and feeling out of your depth in a job can be highly frustrating and demoralising.

 

Salary and Benefits

It is important to consider the salary and benefits of your new job offer, especially if you are leaving your current role. You may find that if you sit down and properly analyse your job offer, you are walking away with less money when the two are combined. If the money is important in your decision, you may need to re-think accepting the job or negotiate the salary with the employer.

 

Development

Some candidates are looking to move and progress within their industry, while others are happy to just do the job. If progression and development are important to you, make sure you find out what the company are prepared to offer and be clear with your expectations. If the expectations are not attuned, it will cause problems further down the line.

 

Location

The location of the job is also important, in terms of both cost and how accessible it is. If you are relying on public transport, it is essential that you work out how and if it is going to be possible to get there and how long it will take. The cost of transport can also greatly affect your salary, so work this out carefully before you accept.

Culture

It can be difficult to determine the culture of a company before you even start, but this is a really important aspect, as it can affect your overall well-being if you make the wrong choice. For example, if you are quite an outgoing, positive person and the culture is very negative, it will eventually take its toll on you. If you enjoy working on your own initiative, make sure you won’t be micro managed in the job. You can find out more about the culture by asking contacts you have or by taking a good look at the company’s website. The more information you have, the more informed your decision will be.
